How FILTROX SuperSorb® Carbon Pads Work: Depth Filtration Explained

Not all filter pads are the same. SuperSorb® uses a three-stage depth filtration process that no ordinary filter paper or powder system can replicate.

If you've ever wondered why some fry operations seem to get significantly more mileage from their oil than others — using similar fryers, similar oil, and frying similar foods — the answer almost always comes down to one variable: what they're using to filter it. FILTROX SuperSorb® Carbon Pads deliver a fundamentally different filtration result because they operate on a fundamentally different principle: depth filtration with active oil treatment.

What is Depth Filtration?

Standard filter paper performs surface filtration — it catches particles that are too large to pass through the pore openings at the paper's surface. Once the surface is loaded with particles, filtration efficiency drops and the oil passing through is still laden with finer contaminants, color compounds, and odor molecules.

Depth filtration works through the entire thickness of the filter medium, not just its surface. SuperSorb® Carbon Pads are constructed with a dense, multi-layered cellulose fiber matrix that becomes progressively tighter as oil travels deeper into the pad. This three-stage mechanism delivers results no surface filter can match:

  1. Stage 1 — Surface Capture: Large solid particles — breading, batter crumbs, food bits — are trapped on the outer surface of the pad before they can enter the deep-fry cycle again.
  2. Stage 2 — Internal Entrapment: Smaller particles that pass the surface are captured within the dense pore network inside the pad. The internal structure has an enormous volume of tiny pores — effectively a three-dimensional particle trap — that retains solids that would pass directly through surface-only filters.
  3. Stage 3 — Active Treatment: Activated carbon and specialty adsorbent powders are built permanently into the pad structure itself. These actives physically adsorb metallic ions, soaps, color compounds, off-flavors, and odor-causing molecules from the oil as it passes through. The key word is built in — the actives are integrated into the cellulose matrix and will not wash out or contaminate the oil, unlike loose powder systems.

Why "Single Pass" Matters

Because SuperSorb® Carbon Pads perform all three stages simultaneously, the oil requires only a single pass through the filter to be clean enough to return directly to the fryer. With traditional filter paper — even when combined with adsorbent powder — operators often need to "polish" the oil with multiple passes to achieve comparable cleanliness. That extra time and effort adds up across every filter cycle, every day, multiplied across every fryer in the operation.

SuperSorb® Carbon Pad

The standard flat-pad format for all portable and built-in fryer filtration systems. Available in sizes for 18+ fryer manufacturers including Pitco, Frymaster, Henny Penny, Dean, and Vulcan.

SuperSorb® Pleated Carbon Pad

A 2-in-1 filter combining activated carbon depth filtration with a pleated pre-filter layer. Designed for heavy-duty, high-volume frying applications where a standard pad may load more quickly.

SuperSorb® Carbon Envelope

The same SuperSorb® technology in an envelope format, compatible with fryer models that require an enclosed filter type — including select Henny Penny and Pitco models.

No Powder Required

The active carbon and adsorbents are built into every pad. There is no loose powder to measure, handle, or risk contaminating the oil. Simply install a fresh pad, filter, and return the oil to the fryer.

Biodegradable and BPI Certified

SuperSorb® Carbon Pads are made primarily from cellulose — a naturally biodegradable material — and have earned certification from the Biodegradability Products Institute (BPI), meeting the ASTM D6400 and/or D6868 standards for compostable products. For operators tracking sustainability metrics, this means every used filter pad can be composted rather than landfilled, reducing the operation's total waste footprint.

SuperSorb® is also NSF approved, meeting all standard requirements to protect human health and the environment. Whether your concern is performance, safety, or sustainability — SuperSorb® Carbon Pads are engineered to deliver on all three.
